Braveheart North American theatrical release poster Directed by Mel Gibson Produced by Mel Gibson Alan Ladd Jr. Bruce Davey Written by Randall Wallace Starring Mel Gibson Sophie Marceau Patrick McGoohan Catherine McCormack Music by James Horner Cinematography John Toll Edited by Steven Rosenblum Production company Icon Productions The Ladd Company Distributed by Paramount Pictures (North America) 20th Century Fox (International) Release date May 18, 1995 ( Seattle) May 24, 1995 (United States) Running time 178 minutes Country United States [1] Language English Budget $65–70 million [2] [3] Box office $210. 4 million [2] Braveheart is a 1995 American epic war film directed and co-produced by Mel Gibson, who portrays William Wallace, a late-13th-century Scottish warrior. The film is fictionally based on the life of Wallace leading the Scots in the First War of Scottish Independence against King Edward I of England. The film also stars Sophie Marceau, Patrick McGoohan and Catherine McCormack. The story is inspired by Blind Harry 's epic poem The Actes and Deidis of the Illustre and Vallyeant Campioun Schir William Wallace and was adapted for the screen by Randall Wallace. Development on the film initially started at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer when producer Alan Ladd Jr. picked up the project from Wallace, but when MGM was going through new management, Ladd left the studio and took the project with him. Despite initially declining, Gibson eventually decided to direct the film, as well as star as Wallace. The film was filmed in Scotland and Ireland from June to October 1994 with a budget around $65–70 million. [4] Braveheart, which was produced by Gibson's Icon Productions and The Ladd Company, was distributed by Paramount Pictures in North America and by 20th Century Fox internationally. Released on May 24, 1995, Braveheart received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the performances, directing, production values, battle sequences, and musical score, but criticized its inaccuracies regarding Wallace's title, love interests, and attire. [5] The film grossed $75. 6 million in the US and grossed $210. 4 million worldwide. At the 68th Academy Awards, the film was nominated for ten Academy Awards and won five: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup, and Best Sound Editing. A sequel, Robert the Bruce, was released in 2019, with Angus Macfadyen reprising his role. Plot [ edit] In 1280, King Edward "Longshanks" invades and conquers Scotland following the death of Alexander III of Scotland, who left no heir to the throne. Young William Wallace witnesses Longshanks' treachery, survives the deaths of his father and brother, and is taken abroad on a pilgrimage throughout Europe by his paternal uncle Argyle, where he is educated. Years later, in 1297, Longshanks grants his noblemen land and privileges in Scotland, including Prima Nocte. Meanwhile, a grown Wallace returns to Scotland and falls in love with his childhood friend Murron MacClannough, and the two marry in secret. Wallace rescues Murron from being raped by English soldiers, but as she fights off their second attempt, Murron is captured and publicly executed. In retribution, Wallace leads his clan to slaughter the English garrison in his hometown and send the occupying garrison at Lanark back to England. Longshanks orders his son Prince Edward to stop Wallace by any means necessary. Alongside his friend Hamish, Wallace rebels against the English, and as his legend spreads, hundreds of Scots from the surrounding clans join him. Wallace leads his army to victory at the Battle of Stirling and then destroys the city of York, killing Longshanks' nephew and sending his severed head to the king. Wallace seeks the assistance of Robert the Bruce, the son of nobleman Robert the Elder and a contender for the Scottish crown. Robert is dominated by his father, who wishes to secure the throne for his son by submitting to the English. Worried by the threat of the rebellion, Longshanks sends his son's wife Isabella of France to try to negotiate with Wallace as a distraction for the landing of another invasion force in Scotland. After meeting him in person, Isabella becomes enamored of Wallace. She warns him of the coming invasion, and Wallace implores the Scottish nobility to take immediate action to counter the threat and take back the country, asking Robert the Bruce to lead. In 1298, leading the English army himself, Longshanks confronts the Scots at Falkirk. There, noblemen Mornay and Lochlan turn their backs on Wallace after being bribed by the king, resulting in the death of Hamish's father, Campbell. Wallace is then further betrayed when he discovers Robert the Bruce was fighting alongside Longshanks; after the battle, after seeing the damage he helped do to his countrymen, the Bruce reprimands his father and vows not to be on the wrong side again. Wallace kills Lochlan and Mornay for their betrayal, and wages a guerrilla war against the English for the next seven years, assisted by Isabella, with whom he eventually has an affair. In 1305, Robert sets up a meeting with Wallace in Edinburgh, but Robert's father has conspired with other nobles to capture and hand over Wallace to the English. Learning of his treachery, Robert disowns and banishes his father. Isabella exacts revenge on the now terminally ill Longshanks by telling him that his bloodline will be destroyed upon his death as she is now pregnant with Wallace's child. In London, Wallace is brought before an English magistrate, tried for high treason, and condemned to public torture and beheading. Even whilst being hanged, drawn and quartered, Wallace refuses to submit to the king. The watching crowd, deeply moved by the Scotsman's valor, begin crying for mercy. The magistrate offers him one final chance, asking him only to utter the word, "Mercy", and be granted a quick death. Wallace instead shouts, "Freedom! ", and the judge orders his death. As Wallace's cry rings through the square, Longshanks hears it just before dying. Moments before being decapitated, Wallace sees a vision of Murron in the crowd, smiling at him. In 1314, Robert, now Scotland's king, leads a Scottish army before a ceremonial line of English troops on the fields of Bannockburn, where he is to formally accept English rule. As he begins to ride toward the English, he stops and invokes Wallace's memory. Hamish throws Wallace's sword, Braveheart, point-down in front of the English army, imploring his men to fight with Robert as they did with Wallace. With the Scots chanting Wallace's name, Robert then leads his army into battle against the stunned English, winning the Scots their freedom. The final shot of the film is the sun setting behind Braveheart as it sways in the wind. Cast [ edit] Production [ edit] This section needs expansion. You can help by adding to it. ( February 2020) Producer Alan Ladd Jr. initially had the project at MGM-Pathé Communications when he picked up the script from Wallace. [6] When MGM was going through new management in 1993, Ladd left the studio and took some of its top properties, including Braveheart. [7] Gibson came across the script and even though he liked it, he initially passed on it. However, the thought of it kept coming back to him and he ultimately decided to take on the project. [6] Gibson was initially interested in directing only and considered Brad Pitt in the role of William Wallace, but Gibson reluctantly agreed to play Wallace as well. [3] Gibson (right) on set with 20th Century Fox executive Scott Neeson Gibson and his production company, Icon Productions, had difficulty raising enough money for the film. Warner Bros. was willing to fund the project on the condition that Gibson sign for another Lethal Weapon sequel, which he refused. Gibson eventually gained enough financing for the film, with Paramount Pictures financing a third of the budget in exchange for North American distribution rights to the film, and 20th Century Fox putting up two thirds of the budget in exchange for international distribution rights. [8] [3] Principal photography on the film began on June 6, 1994. [9] While the crew spent three weeks shooting on location in Scotland, the major battle scenes were shot in Ireland using members of the Irish Army Reserve as extras. To lower costs, Gibson had the same extras, up to 1, 600 in some scenes, portray both armies. The reservists had been given permission to grow beards and swapped their military uniforms for medieval garb. [10] Principal photography ended on October 28, 1994. [11] The film was shot in the anamorphic format with Panavision C- and E-Series lenses. [12] Gibson had to tone down the film's battle scenes to avoid an NC-17 rating from the MPAA; the final version was rated R for "brutal medieval warfare ". [13] Gibson and editor Steven Rosenblum initially had a film at 195 minutes, but Sheryl Lansing, who was the head of Paramount at the time, requested Gibson and Rosenblum to cut the film down to 177 minutes. [14] According to Gibson in a 2016 interview with Collider, there is a four-hour version of the film and would be interested in reassembling it if both Paramount and Fox are interested. [15] Soundtrack [ edit] The score was composed and conducted by James Horner and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. It is Horner's second of three collaborations with Mel Gibson as director. The score has gone on to be one of the most commercially successful soundtracks of all time. It received considerable acclaim from film critics and audiences and was nominated for a number of awards, including the Academy Award, Saturn Award, BAFTA Award, and Golden Globe Award. Release and reception [ edit] Box office [ edit] On its opening weekend, Braveheart grossed $9, 938, 276 in the United States and $75. 6 million in its box office run in the U. S. and Canada. [2] Worldwide, the film grossed $210, 409, 945 and was the thirteenth-highest-grossing film of 1995. [2] Critical response [ edit] Braveheart earned positive reviews; critics praised Gibson's direction and performance as Wallace, the performances of its cast, and its screenplay, production values, Horner's score, and the battle sequences. The depiction of the Battle of Stirling Bridge was listed by CNN as one of the best battles in cinema history. [16] However, it was also criticized for its depiction of history. The film holds a 77% approval rating at review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with an average score of 7. 25/10, based on 75 reviews. The site's consensus states "Distractingly violent and historically dodgy, Mel Gibson's Braveheart justifies its epic length by delivering enough sweeping action, drama, and romance to match its ambition. " [17] The film also has a score of 68 out of 100 on Metacritic based on 20 critic reviews indicating "generally favorable reviews". [18] Caryn James of The New York Times praised the film, calling it "one of the most spectacular entertainments in years. " Roger Ebert gave the film 3. 5 stars out of four, calling it "An action epic with the spirit of the Hollywood swordplay classics and the grungy ferocity of The Road Warrior. " In a positive review, Gene Siskel wrote that "in addition to staging battle scenes well, Gibson also manages to recreate the filth and mood of 700 years ago. " [19] Peter Travers of Rolling Stone felt that "though the film dawdles a bit with the shimmery, dappled love stuff involving Wallace with a Scottish peasant and a French princess, the action will pin you to your seat. " Not all reviews were positive, however. Richard Schickel of TIME magazine argued that "everybody knows that a non-blubbering clause is standard in all movie stars' contracts. Too bad there isn't one banning self-indulgence when they direct. " [20] Peter Stack of San Francisco Chronicle felt "at times the film seems an obsessive ode to Mel Gibson machismo. " [21] In a 2005 poll by British film magazine Empire, Braveheart was No. 1 on their list of "The Top 10 Worst Pictures to Win Best Picture Oscar". [22] Empire readers had previously voted Braveheart the best film of 1995. [23] Effect on tourism [ edit] The European premiere was on September 3, 1995, in Stirling. [24] In 1996, the year after the film was released, the annual three-day "Braveheart Conference" at Stirling Castle attracted fans of Braveheart, increasing the conference's attendance to 167, 000 from 66, 000 in the previous year. [25] In the following year, research on visitors to the Stirling area indicated that 55% of the visitors had seen Braveheart. Of visitors from outside Scotland, 15% of those who saw Braveheart said it influenced their decision to visit the country. Of all visitors who saw Braveheart, 39% said the film influenced in part their decision to visit Stirling, and 19% said the film was one of the main reasons for their visit. [26] In the same year, a tourism report said that the " Braveheart effect" earned Scotland £7 million to £15 million in tourist revenue, and the report led to various national organizations encouraging international film productions to take place in Scotland. [27] The film generated huge interest in Scotland and in Scottish history, not only around the world, but also in Scotland itself. Fans came from all over the world to see the places in Scotland where William Wallace fought, also to the places in Scotland and Ireland used as locations in the film. [ citation needed] At a Braveheart Convention in 1997, held in Stirling the day after the Scottish Devolution vote and attended by 200 delegates from around the world, Braveheart author Randall Wallace, Seoras Wallace of the Wallace Clan, Scottish historian David Ross and Bláithín FitzGerald from Ireland gave lectures on various aspects of the film. [ citation needed] Several of the actors also attended including James Robinson (Young William), Andrew Weir (Young Hamish), Julie Austin (the young bride) and Mhairi Calvey (Young Murron). [ citation needed] Awards and honors [ edit] Braveheart was nominated for many awards during the 1995 Oscar season, though it was not viewed by many as a major contender such as Apollo 13, Il Postino: The Postman, Leaving Las Vegas, Sense and Sensibility, and The Usual Suspects. It wasn't until after the film won the Golden Globe Award for Best Director at the 53rd Golden Globe Awards that it was viewed as a serious Oscar contender. When the nominations were announced for the 68th Academy Awards, Braveheart received ten Academy Award nominations, and a month later, won five including Best Picture, Best Director for Gibson, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Effects Editing, and Best Makeup. [28] Braveheart became the ninth film to win Best Picture with no acting nominations and is one of only three films to win Best Picture without being nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, the other being The Shape of Water in 2017 and followed by Green Book the following year. [29] [30] [31] The film also won the Writer's Guild of America Award for Best Original Screenplay. [40] Wallace Monument [ edit] In 1997, a 12-foot (3. 7 m), 13-tonne (13-long-ton; 14-short-ton) sandstone statue depicting Mel Gibson as William Wallace in Braveheart was placed in the car park of the Wallace Monument near Stirling, Scotland. The statue, which was the work of Tom Church, a monumental mason from Brechin, [41] included the word 'Braveheart' on Wallace's shield. The installation became the cause of much controversy; one local resident stated that it was wrong to "desecrate the main memorial to Wallace with a lump of crap". [42] In 1998, someone wielding a hammer vandalized the statue's face. After repairs were made, the statue was encased in a cage every night to prevent further vandalism. This only incited more calls for the statue to be removed, as it then appeared that the Gibson/Wallace figure was imprisoned. The statue was described as "among the most loathed pieces of public art in Scotland". [43] In 2008, the statue was returned to its sculptor to make room for a new visitor centre being built at the foot of the Wallace Monument. [44] Historical inaccuracy [ edit] Randall Wallace, who wrote the screenplay, has acknowledged Blind Harry 's 15th-century epic poem The Acts and Deeds of Sir William Wallace, Knight of Elderslie as a major inspiration for the film. [45] In defending his script, Randall Wallace has said, "Is Blind Harry true? I don't know. I know that it spoke to my heart and that's what matters to me, that it spoke to my heart. " [45] Blind Harry's poem is not regarded as historically accurate, and although some incidents in the film that are not historically accurate are taken from Blind Harry (e. g. the hanging of Scottish nobles at the start), [46] there are large parts that are based neither on history nor Blind Harry (e. Wallace's affair with Princess Isabella). [5] Elizabeth Ewan describes Braveheart as a film that "almost totally sacrifices historical accuracy for epic adventure". [47] The "brave heart" refers in Scottish history to that of Robert the Bruce, and an attribution by William Edmondstoune Aytoun, in his poem Heart of Bruce, to Sir James the Good Douglas: "Pass thee first, thou dauntless heart, As thou wert wont of yore! ", prior to Douglas' demise at the Battle of Teba in Andalusia. [48] It has been described as one of the most historically inaccurate modern films. [5] Sharon Krossa noted that the film contains numerous historical errors, beginning with the wearing of belted plaid by Wallace and his men. In that period "no Scots [... ] wore belted plaids (let alone kilts of any kind). " Moreover, when Highlanders finally did begin wearing the belted plaid, it was not "in the rather bizarre style depicted in the film". She compares the inaccuracy to "a film about Colonial America showing the colonial men wearing 20th century business suits, but with the jackets worn back-to-front instead of the right way around. " [49] In a previous essay about the film, she wrote, "The events aren't accurate, the dates aren't accurate, the characters aren't accurate, the names aren't accurate, the clothes aren't accurate—in short, just about nothing is accurate. " [50] The belted plaid ( feileadh mór léine) was not introduced until the 16th century. [51] Peter Traquair has referred to Wallace's "farcical representation as a wild and hairy highlander painted with woad (1, 000 years too late) running amok in a tartan kilt (500 years too early). " [52] In fact, Wallace was a lowlander; thus, the mountains and glens of his home as depicted in the film are also inaccurate. Irish historian Seán Duffy remarked "the battle of Stirling Bridge could have done with a bridge. " [53] In 2009, the film was second on a list of "most historically inaccurate movies" in The Times. [5] In the humorous non-fictional historiography An Utterly Impartial History of Britain (2007), author John O'Farrell claims that Braveheart could not have been more historically inaccurate, even if a Plasticine dog had been inserted in the film and the title changed to " William Wallace and Gromit ". [54] In the DVD audio commentary of Braveheart, Mel Gibson acknowledges many of the historical inaccuracies but defends his choices as director, noting that the way events were portrayed in the film was much more "cinematically compelling" than the historical fact or conventional mythos. [5] Jus primae noctis [ edit] Edward Longshanks, King of England, is shown invoking Jus primae noctis, allowing the lord of a medieval estate to take the virginity of his serfs' maiden daughters on their wedding nights. Critical medieval scholarship regards this supposed right as a myth: "the simple reason why we are dealing with a myth here rests in the surprising fact that practically all writers who make any such claims have never been able or willing to cite any trustworthy source, if they have any. " [55] [56] Occupation and independence [ edit] The film suggests Scotland had been under English occupation for some time, at least during Wallace's childhood, and in the run-up to the Battle of Falkirk Wallace says to the younger Bruce, "[W]e'll have what none of us have ever had before, a country of our own. " In fact, Scotland had been invaded by England only the year before Wallace's rebellion; prior to the death of King Alexander III it had been a fully separate kingdom. [57] At one point, Wallace's uncle refers to a piper as “playing outlawed tunes on outlawed pipes. " Not only were bagpipes not outlawed at the time, they likely had not yet been introduced to Scotland. Further, the widely-held belief that bagpipes were banned by the Act of Proscription 1746 (400 years later), is erroneous. Bagpipes were never specifically outlawed in Scotland. Portrayal of William Wallace [ edit] As John Shelton Lawrence and Robert Jewett writes, "Because [William] Wallace is one of Scotland's most important national heroes and because he lived in the very distant past, much that is believed about him is probably the stuff of legend. But there is a factual strand that historians agree to", summarized from Scots scholar Matt Ewart: Wallace was born into the gentry of Scotland; his father lived until he was 18, his mother until his 24th year; he killed the sheriff of Lanark when he was 27, apparently after the murder of his wife; he led a group of commoners against the English in a very successful battle at Stirling in 1297, temporarily receiving appointment as guardian; Wallace's reputation as a military leader was ruined in the same year of 1297, leading to his resignation as guardian; he spent several years of exile in France before being captured by the English at Glasgow, this resulting in his trial for treason and his cruel execution. [58] A. E. Christa Canitz writes about the historical William Wallace further: "[He] was a younger son of the Scottish gentry, usually accompanied by his own chaplain, well-educated, and eventually, having been appointed Guardian of the Kingdom of Scotland, engaged in diplomatic correspondence with the Hanseatic cities of Lübeck and Hamburg ". She finds that in Braveheart, "any hint of his descent from the lowland gentry (i. e., the lesser nobility) is erased, and he is presented as an economically and politically marginalized Highlander and 'a farmer'—as one with the common peasant, and with a strong spiritual connection to the land which he is destined to liberate. " [59] Colin McArthur writes that Braveheart "constructs Wallace as a kind of modern, nationalist guerrilla leader in a period half a millennium before the appearance of nationalism on the historical stage as a concept under which disparate classes and interests might be mobilised within a nation state. " Writing about Braveheart ' s "omissions of verified historical facts", McArthur notes that Wallace made "overtures to Edward I seeking less severe treatment after his defeat at Falkirk", as well as "the well-documented fact of Wallace's having resorted to conscription and his willingness to hang those who refused to serve. " [60] Canitz posits that depicting "such lack of class solidarity" as the conscriptions and related hangings "would contaminate the movie's image of Wallace as the morally irreproachable primus inter pares among his peasant fighters. " [59] Portrayal of Isabella of France [ edit] Isabella of France is shown having an affair with Wallace after the Battle of Falkirk. She later tells Edward I she is pregnant, implying that her son, Edward III, was a product of the affair. In reality, Isabella was around three years old and living in France at the time of the Battle of Falkirk, was not married to Edward II until he was already king, and Edward III was born seven years after Wallace died. [61] [5] Portrayal of Robert the Bruce [ edit] Robert the Bruce did change sides between the Scots loyalists and the English more than once in the earlier stages of the Wars of Scottish Independence, but he never betrayed Wallace directly, and he probably did not fight on the English side at the Battle of Falkirk (although this claim does appear in a few medieval sources). [62] Later, the Battle of Bannockburn was not a spontaneous battle; he had already been fighting a guerrilla campaign against the English for eight years. [63] His title before becoming king was Earl of Carrick, not Earl of Bruce. [64] Portrayal of Longshanks and Prince Edward [ edit] The actual Edward I was ruthless and temperamental, but the film exaggerates his negative aspects for effect. Edward enjoyed poetry and harp music, was a devoted and loving husband to his wife Eleanor of Castile, and as a religious man, he gave generously to charity. The film's scene where he scoffs cynically at Isabella for distributing gold to the poor after Wallace refuses it as a bribe would have been unlikely. Also, Edward died on campaign two years after Wallace's execution, not in bed at his home. [65] The depiction of the future Edward II as an effeminate homosexual drew accusations of homophobia against Gibson. We cut a scene out, unfortunately... where you really got to know that character [Edward II] and to understand his plight and his pain... But it just stopped the film in the first act so much that you thought, 'When's this story going to start? ' [66] [ better source needed] Gibson defended his depiction of Prince Edward as weak and ineffectual, saying: I'm just trying to respond to history. You can cite other examples— Alexander the Great, for example, who conquered the entire world, was also a homosexual. But this story isn't about Alexander the Great. It's about Edward II. [67] In response to Longshanks' murder of the Prince's male lover Phillip, Gibson replied: "The fact that King Edward throws this character out a window has nothing to do with him being gay... He's terrible to his son, to everybody. " [68] Gibson asserted that the reason Longshanks kills his son's lover is because the king is a " psychopath ". [69] Gibson expressed bewilderment that some filmgoers would laugh at this murder. The real Gaveston was never murdered by Edward I. Edward I died in 1307, with Gaveston living past his death, until 1312. [70] Wallace's military campaign [ edit] "MacGregors from the next glen" joining Wallace shortly after the action at Lanark is dubious, since it is questionable whether Clan Gregor existed at that stage, and when they did emerge their traditional home was Glen Orchy, some distance from Lanark. [71] Wallace did win an important victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge, but the version in Braveheart is highly inaccurate, as it was filmed without a bridge (and without Andrew Moray, joint commander of the Scots army, who was fatally injured in the battle). Later, Wallace did carry out a large-scale raid into the north of England, but he did not get as far south as York, nor did he kill Longshanks' nephew [72] (however, this was not as wide of the mark as Blind Harry, who has Wallace making it as far south as St. Albans, and only refraining from attacking London after the English queen came out to meet him). [46] Edward's nephew John of Brittany did take part in the Wars of Scottish Independence, but he was not killed, dying of natural causes. [73] The "Irish conscripts" at the Battle of Falkirk are also unhistorical; there were no Irish troops at Falkirk (although many of the English army were actually Welsh) [74] and it is anachronistic to refer to conscripts in the Middle Ages (although there were feudal levies). The two-handed long swords used by Gibson in the film were not in wide use in the period. A one-handed sword and shield would have been more accurate. [75] Accusations of Anglophobia [ edit] Sections of the English media accused the film of harboring Anglophobia. The Economist called it " xenophobic ", [76] and John Sutherland writing in The Guardian stated that: " Braveheart gave full rein to a toxic Anglophobia". [77] [78] [79] In The Times, Colin McArthur said "the political effects are truly pernicious. It's a xenophobic film. " [78] Ian Burrell of The Independent has noted, "The Braveheart phenomenon, a Hollywood-inspired rise in Scottish nationalism, has been linked to a rise in anti-English prejudice". [80] Home media [ edit] Braveheart was released on DVD on August 29, 2000. [81] It was released on Blu-ray as part of the Paramount Sapphire Series on September 1, 2009. [82] It was released on 4K UHD Blu-ray as part of the 4K upgrade of the Paramount Sapphire Series on May 15, 2018. [82] Sequel [ edit] On February 9, 2018, a sequel titled Robert the Bruce was announced. The film will lead directly on from Braveheart and follow the widow Moira, portrayed by Anna Hutchison, and her family (portrayed by Gabriel Bateman and Talitha Bateman), who save Robert the Bruce, with Angus Macfadyen reprising his role from Braveheart. The cast will also include Jared Harris, Patrick Fugit, Zach McGowan, Emma Kenney, Diarmaid Murtagh, Seoras Wallace, Shane Coffey, Kevin McNally, and Melora Walters. Richard Gray will direct the film, with Macfadyen and Eric Belgau writing the script. Helmer Gray, Macfadyen, Hutchison, Kim Barnard, Nick Farnell, Cameron Nuggent, and Andrew Curry will produce the film. Spartacus probably will for all time be the definitive epic film about Martyrdom and the fight for freedom against oppression. It manages to succeed better than Braveheart because it depicted a hero on which less than a page of recorded history is known. Therefore the story doesn't leave itself open for historical inaccuracies and, with traditional hollywood elements, weaves together a tale of a man fighting against all odds for the two things that should matter most. love and freedom. It also explores fascinating subplots to do with the corruption of power, the politics of ancient Rome and the meaning of loyalty which elevates the picture far higher than just an old Gladiator movie.
Braveheart, by aspiring to tell the story of a legendary martyr and hero, falls into the Hollywood trap of how much is fact and how much is fiction. The film is visually authentic but enough is known about Wallace to expose the several liberties the screenwriter and producers took with history. Some can be excused of course because of time constraints but others cannot be quite so forgiven. The omission of Stirling bridge is a strange decision but it is the contrived devices of pitting Wallace against the Queen romantically (and having her whisper to Long Shanks on his death bed she conceived Wallace's child) and the depiction of Robert the Bruce as an indecisive young nobleman getting counsel from his leper father (one almost expects the old man to say "the Dark side of the Force has many advantages my son. and selling out Wallace on the battlefield only to see the light and take up wallace's struggle in the end, that are undeniably contrived and foolish. Other things such as the obligatory inclusion of an Irishman in Wallace's band to give the film contemporary pertinence and the scene where Wallace goes on a Rambo revenge quest against the Scottish lords who betrayed him in battle further discredit the film as an accurate document. The scene where he bursts into that bedchamber at night on horseback and escapes through the window was old fashioned Hollywood daring do better left to Errol Flynn and Tyrone Power. In this film it is just unbelievable.
As a history lesson Braveheart falls woefully short, and so too as an examination of Wallace himself and his politics. But does this mean the film is ineffective and bad? Absolutely not.
Braveheart packs an extraordinary amount of emotion into the story and succeeds in getting it's ultimate message across without question. Although a romanticised account it nevertheless has moments of sheer power. I dare anyone to deny they remained unmoved when wallace is drawn and quartered at the end and sees the vision of his dead wife walking amongst the crowd of onlookers before he carries out his final cry of freedom. Manipulative? Of course. And needed to bring the story full circle.
Technically, Mel went a little overboard with the slow motion sequences, which seem to add about ten minutes to the overall running time, and the film on a whole could have been cut by at least a half hour. The Battle scenes are incredible and the best ever shot as far as realism. Mel's performance, incidental as was John Wayne's when he was directing The Alamo, is quite good, though possibly a little too gentlemanly and clean cut at times for such a savage warrior.
Braveheart is not a great film, but it is recommended as a stirring cinematic experience. The fact that it rewrites history is not as important as it's final outcome. How ever Wallace got to his final torture and execution, he got there because he fought for the freedom of Scotland.

This disaster plus action movie is exciting from big disaster scene near the beginning to the very end. The effects are as good as any Western blockbuster and the battle sequences are exciting and well choreographed. The characters are funny and quite endearing. The story is more complex than expected with a good amount of humour and some political subplot involving nukes North South China and US. Good use of some big name Korean stars.

Awesome, awesome mere kuch aur points clear hue thanks for the video. Mdr c'est génant non. Images from Chinese Portrait ( Wang Xiaoshuai, 2018) A brief sequence in Wang Xiaoshuai’s new documentary depicts the scene at a Chinese coastal resort. In one shot, a man stands gazing out at the sea while children splash around happily and families lounge on the sand in the background; in another, a middle-aged man wearing swimming trunks and a medallion looks to camera quizzically, with the thoroughly rakish look of an ageing holiday Lothario. These may not be not exceptional images in themselves, but they made me realize that this was something I had never seen in a Chinese film before, documentary or fiction: something as ordinary as people enjoying leisure time themselves on the beach. It’s not that Chinese cinema has necessarily been avoiding this aspect of life as too mundane or undramatic, just surely that contemporary life in China is so vast and multifarious that the national cinema may not be able to trawl in all its facets. Nevertheless, this 2018 documentary by “Sixth Generation” director Wang makes a good attempt at doing that. The first great film of this year, arguably, was Wang Xiaoshuai’s three-hour  So Long, My  Son, which followed a family through three decades of modern Chinese history; although it is only 80 minutes long, his  Chinese Portrait  is equally expansive, although in a telegraphic, fragmented manner. In its English title, the film presents itself as an overall portrait of a nation, but each single image is itself a portrait—of people, locations, lifestyles, traditions. We see Chinese work, leisure, religion (Buddhist and Muslim); we see industry, transport, agriculture, landscape tamed and in revolt. There are just over 60 main shots in Wang’s film—give or take a handful that figure as all but subliminal—nearly all of them locked off, many of them highly composed, even artificial. Shot over 10 years on both film and digital, sometimes emphasizing the portrait aspect by the use of Academy ratio frames with rounded corners—sometimes separated by lengths of leader in various colors—the film offers a range of snapshots of contemporary China. It’s hard to resist the allusion to still photography. Wang often poses his subjects in stationary groups, while a single element in the picture—a chain, a flapping bit of fabric, or an unruly child—moves to remind us that we’re not looking at stills. These images resemble a set of pictures in a modern photography gallery: most of them have a stillness and composure that makes you want to hold at length on each one before walking on to the next. In some of the larger landscape shots with human figures, you might think of the huge staged compositions of Jeff Wall: a grey vista of tower blocks, with the tiny figure of a street cleaner in day-glo orange wandering in the foreground. The more spectacular images of workplaces—offices, factories, a classroom—have a touch of Andreas Gursky. The images are presented without commentary, explanatory captions, or even subtitles in those sequences that contain dialogue; there’s barely any music. This is a country laid out before us, but not with appeal to the touristic eye; the non-Chinese viewer is often left to guess at the exact nature of context and content alike, although nearly all the images are fairly transparent and immediate in their effect. Does it help to know, however, that one shot of the director himself shows him at Tiananmen Square? Another image shows a red-robed Buddhist monk with his back to the camera, facing a range of mountains; flags blow in the breeze, wind is heard in the background. Is this in some way a comment on China’s relationship to Tibet? One suspects it might be, but the film tells us nothing. This is very much, although not entirely, a film about people. Photographed variously by Wu Di, Zeng Jian, Zeng Hu, and Piao Xinghai, many of the shots are posed group portraits, often absolutely still, although not everyone will freeze for the camera. In a photo of a shepherding couple and their flock, the humans stand still while a lamb wriggles in the women’s arms; at a family backyard meal, a little girl wanders around while, conversely, the elderly woman farthest from us gazes intently at the camera. Wang often has a single person looking straight at us out of an otherwise natural shot in which people aren’t apparently aware of the camera at all. In an open-plan office, business appears to go on, as on a normal working day, but one man near the foreground stares at us; similarly, in a university classroom scene full of students writing away, a young woman meets our gaze, immobile, pen to her lips—the seeming naturalness of the scene undermined by the fact that no-one turns a hair when the recess bell rings. Sometimes Wang Xiaoshuai highlights the self-reflexive aspect to his portraiture, or just its painterliness. Some images show the director himself, a stocky, middle-aged man gazing with a somewhat comic glumness at the camera: in Tiananmen Square, or on the back platform of a moving train (he then cuts away to passengers looking back at the camera, or back at him, although most appear to lose interest after a few moments). In another, the film’s one overt joke, he stands in the yard of a seemingly disused factory, before a line of workers file right past him, ignoring him totally (his nod to the Lumières and the birth of cinema? ). We see a group of young women posing in a desolate landscape, while in the foreground, a mainly blank canvas shows the sketched outline of one of them. After a while, the painter appears in shot—Liu Xiadong, whose work was apparently one of the inspirations for this film (a Google search reveals that this image shows him working on a 2010 group portrait called Out of Beichuan). Another image shows a young female dancer standing against a pillar, others lined up in a dark background in sequins and tulle; with its artfully achieved lighting, it seems to channel a painting by Degas or Lautrec. Edited by Valérie Loiseleux—a long-term collaborator of Manoel de Oliveira and Eugène Green—this leisurely film sometimes frames images in isolation, sometimes juxtaposes them for analogy or contrast, very occasionally uses sound to stitch together suites of seemingly unconnected images. One sequence shows a plane etching a white line across a blue sky, then a factory belching smoke, ice drifting on a river, sheep in a green field gradually sweeping across the entire screen; what connects them is a little symphony of unexplained, seemingly unconnected sounds (beginning with footsteps, odd scratchings) threaded throughout. In images like this, or in a single extended shot of long grass waving in the wind,  Chinese Portrait  echoes Abbas Kiarostami’s  Five; elsewhere its group portraits echo Agnès Varda and JR’s  Faces Places. There is very little event in  Chinese Portrait, although one incident is quite genuinely explosive: an excavator with a drill attachment chips away insistently at the corner pillar of a huge concrete industrial building, until it suddenly crashed down with an almighty boom, dust filling the screen. This is one of many images of destruction and reconstruction in the film, some by all accounts relating to the devastating earthquake of the Sichuan province in 2008—such as the apartment block caved in down the middle, like a collapsed cake. By contrast, there are various buildings under construction, some of them glumly functional, as opposed to the glossy display maquette of a city project space with glowing skyscrapers. In its fragmented, montaged way,  Chinese Portrait  tells as forceful a picture of social change as Wang’s  So Long, My Son, which spans several decades and ends with its lead characters returning to the city they once knew, some of the buildings they knew still intact in a city transformed almost beyond recognition. One of the film’s juxtapositions might sound too overt and pointless when described, yet it makes for an eloquent ending. In the penultimate shot, shot from a low angle, a group of rural workers recede into the distance (the film makes consistently strong use of forced perspective) on a plain of parched, cracked earth. At the forefront is a small child clasping a metal bucket, and a women holding out an empty metal bowl. They seem to be pleading to the camera for food in times of need, and the image would almost be crushingly overstated if not for one element; among this static poised group, the child is fidgeting and looking nervously around, bringing an almost comic touch of disruptive chance to this otherwise contrived-seeming tableau. In contrast, the following (and final) shot is one of plenty: it’s an open-air restaurant in a city, a vision of movement and life, with a musician seen singing and playing guitar, and some sort of agitated debate going on in the background. Everything is vivid and spontaneous. Scan the image long enough, though, and you’ll notice one of Wang’s poised, still gazers almost hidden on the left side of the screen: a young man looking out at us, absolutely still, a figure of photographic fixity in the middle of cinematic movement and, by way of a sign-off, challenging us to piece together the film’s sprawling imagistic jigsaw for ourselves. Utilizing beautiful female images to reflect the present consumerism in Chinese society, they share the same symbols and features- smooth faces, red lips, soft hair presented in different postures that show confidence and attractiveness. However, the beautiful but detached eyes reflect the contradiction and fragility in their hearts. The aureole around the characters represents the balance between appearances in inner self. The exaggerating pop culture style captures viewers' hearts. The images of Chinese traditional anniversary paintings, advertisement boards and festive colors have imprinted deeply in Feng's heart at early childhood years. The strong and colorful painting wishes to provoke materialistic dreams and desire from within. The licentiousness is like a continuation of the traditional liveliness with the only difference of value transformation. Feng brought gaudy art into a new cultural level, carefully transforming through close observation and feelings. No matter if he has received recognition, appraisal, self-reflection or sarcasm, the purpose is only to show his self in the environment and true experiences living in this materialistic consumerism world. Looking to the past and even gazing into the future, Feng has successfully transformed the beautiful faces into the psychology of modern people. €25, 000 - €30, 000 FENG ZHENGJIE - PORTRAITS DE CHINE N°9 signed in Chinese and Pinyin and dated 2006 oil on canvas FENG ZHENGJIE Chinese Portrait - G Series No. 18, 2006 €50, 000 - €60, 000 FENG ZHENGJIE - CHINESE PORTRAIT, SERIES N°30 HKD60, 000 - HKD90, 000 This work is in very good condition overall. Download Free The aeronautical. Download free aeronautical. So where is the plane flying through a flock of birds. The real Sarah Connor this time, what a badass actor. YouTube. First off, the marketing for this movie is pretty misleading.
The Aeronauts is what I'd call a "fantasy chick-flick" not a "based on historical events" type of movie. People wouldn't feel bamboozled if they'd made that clear in the trailer, so I'm quite understanding of all the negative reviews.
As for the movie itself. Well, if you can ignore its historical revisionism and eye-rollingly blatant pushing of a progressive political agenda. Then I'd say it's definitely not the worst thing I've ever watched, it has its moments.
I'm quite sure the director must be a big fan of Tim Burton's work, since his stylistic influence can be felt throughout this entire movie; There's the quite over-the-top stage acting, bright color-grading, elaborate set- and costume-designs, lots of fluid camera work, and a heavy reliance on bombastic CGI for its action scenes. So, if you're a fan of "Burtonesque" type fantasy movies, then you will probably feel right at home here.
However, even when judging it purely as a fantasy, it does fall flat in a lot of areas. Both Felicity Jones and Harry Redmayne's characters come off quite unsympathetic from the get-go: Two rich, upper-class snobs who want to ride a balloon as high as possible, because they both want to prove. something. The fact that the pair doesn't have any real on-screen chemistry certainly doesn't help in endearing you - the audience - to their cause. Redmayne has shown himself to be a gifted character actor in past roles, but I think this movie needed a far more subdued, subtle performance to ground things in reality. His weird delivery and strange mannerisms really don't seem to fit the "heroic man of science" type of character he portrays here.
Felicity Jones, on the other hand, does alright with what she's given and she's certainly more lively than she was in 'Rogue One. But it does feel like she's trying too hard in a lot of scenes, to a point where it took me out of the movie quite a number of times. Not a lot of "invisible acting" going on in this one.
The cinematography is decent, some of the sets and costumes in the first act of the movie are very beautiful and the scenes are well choreographed.
Which makes it all the more disappointing when the movie reaches it's second act, from which point on the remainder of the movie's running time takes place inside the small basket of a - not very convincing - CGI hot air balloon. From there on there's no real sense of tension, or drama, even as the two main characters are tumbling from one (supposedly) perilous situation into the next. The unconvincing CGI and physics defying action made it impossible for me to suspend my disbelief for even a second. There are lots of moments where the camera pans down and you're supposed to feel the vertigo effect of being hundreds of feet up into the air, but (like so many modern movies) it all looks like a video game and the plot makes it pretty obvious that these characters will be alright. So any sense of urgency, dread, or danger, all of which should be driving the plot along, just pop like. a balloon.
I did not feel angry at the end of the movie, though, despite the fact that I'd just wasted an hour and a half watching something which definitely wasn't doing it for me. And it did (sort of) trick me into watching, since I'm a fan of history and was hoping/expecting to watch a movie based on the real life story of James Glaiser.
But I'm sure someone might still find it entertaining, as I did here and there. The writing/dialogue has some witty charm and I can imagine teenage/young adult female audiences might enjoy the movie's tone as a whole.
But that's about all the praise I can give it. Objectively speaking, it's just not that good a movie.

Looks great. A Crossbow with Silver Tips. He's nice because his past wasn't in his memory, he wanted to live up to his goals. Muskie's in America are HUGE and they look the same as pike, maybe Jeremy should try over there.

There is a small group of films that have taken on big corporations who have destroyed a large number of lives. Count Dark Waters as being placed in that elite genre which describes a lone (ironically) corporate lawyer who takes on chemical giant DuPont.
In this semi-documentary dramatic work, the case against DuPont in poisoning the water, land and air in and near its facilities- and extensively throughout the world- is overwhelmingly strong. One thread going through my mind while watching Dark Waters is how DuPont will react to this onslaught of evidence against them (Apparently, according one PBS article, the company has a lot of "legal folks" looking into this movie, but it doesn't want to drive more attention to the story. br> It's tough to make a several-year span lawyerly-driven movie ultra-exciting, but the M.M. Carnahan script provides enough visual stimuli (like the massive document discovery provided by DuPont that fills a large room) to move the story forward. Mark Ruffalo's steady demeanor is countered by Anne Hathaway's occasionally over the top histrionics that show the emotional toll one man was undergoing in his battle against DuPont.
Well worth your while to know how much PFOA's (via Teflon, etc) we all are carrying inside of us because of DuPont's lack of honesty.

Just became hulk and smash the factory. DUPONT SPOKESPERSON.

Het face in the thumbnail though😂😂. Great job, this movie looked good, I'll have to watch it. But Mark Ruffalo man, I love you, thanks for endorsing Bernie. We need more of an wave, to drown out all the others candidates. Watching Rob talking made me realise how good of an actor Mark is, he fully emulated the mannerisms and speech to a tee.

Uncut Gems is this a movie about circumcision. Another masterpiece DW!Keep em coming my friend. The last song's name? Edit: haha found it! It's called Something worth fighting for by Josh Auer. in case someone else was looking for it. Beautiful song. Yes to Rob Bilott and many thanks to him ! I've always thought, years ago, that there was something OFF about non-stick cookware, now I wonder what other products to be aware of. Im thanking him for releasing the halibut, that colossal one will be beneficial for the population.

Tohle je prostě úžasný a myslím že více netřeba říci. ڎASNÝ <3

Woot another great story. With a great narrorator. Keep up the hard work your doing a awesome job. These greedy corporations harming the public will get it in the afterlife for the coverups. They think their will save them for not telling the truth. Well, when it is over for them they will face JUDGEMENT DAY FROM A HIGHER POWER. Hey everybody, its Threee dog! Hahaha. I respect him so much. He's not just a smart man, he's a good man. I'm also proud of him for his endorsement of Bernie Sanders for 2020. Shows that he's not all talk, that he's with us - with the people - when it comes to fighting the fight as well.

Lol why is the girl on the bike the creepiest thing about this trailer. Really interesting and scary movie. Was alot more interesting than I thought it might be... and really kept things interesting all the way though the film. Strong story and really great characters.

No its not Erin copy. its a 'Civil Action' John Travolta) copy. This is a perfect platform that I want the public to know about what happened to the Vitek Proplast Teflon TMJ jaw implants disaster that began in the early 1980s where DuPont and the FDA knew of the dangers that Teflon has in a biological living creature as used in a loaded joint like hip and jaw joint implants. DuPont knew in the early 1960s that Teflon will break down and cause serious harm if used in the hip implants back then. but yet, they knowingly knew, but tried to deny their involvement in the Vitek Proplast Teflon TMJ jaw implants complete and utter disaster and tragedy that is being secretly hidden from the public to this very day ( there was a 20/20 segment back in the early 1990s regarding the Vitek Proplast Teflon disaster but after that nothing, promises from the FDA that would help us Vitek victims never came to light of day. Teflon, in which PFOAs were used back then in the 1970-80s, is the main material in the Vitek Proplast Teflon TMJ implants that were grandfathered by the FDA back in the 1980s and caused SERIOUS and PERMANENT continuous SYSTEMIC damage to the patients who had them in. There was a PATHETIC recall by the FDA in the early 1990s and there was no Implant Registry, there are absolutely ZERO TMJ implant registrys to this very day, thats over 40-50 years of implants that the FDA has no idea of who had them and who heard of the recall. The Vitek Proplast Teflon implants was a HUGE coverup by the manufacturer, the surgeons professional organization, surgeons but not all, and the hospital that helped with the research and promotion of the Vitek implants! The Teflon used way back then contains this PFOA Forever Chemical and was used in the Vitek Proplast Teflon TMJ jaw implants. DuPont knew in the early 1960s that Teflon cannot withstand the forces used in a loaded joint like the hip total joints they used back then with Teflon in the TJRs and removed them from the market, BUT, Dr Charles Homsy, an ex-DuPont employee and biomaterial engineer was continuing to research and then implement the Vitek implants after he was supposedly fired from DuPont as they said for him to stop pursuing his research. which of course he did not, and his Vitek Proplast Teflon implants were grandfathered into the FDAs 510-K Pre-market Approval process. then later the FDA had a pathetic safety alert and recall where majority of the Vitek patients had NO idea of the recall, and there are STILL patients with these horrible implants still in them to this very day, and many surgeons will not touch them to get them removed. Please look at the public Facebook group “Were Americas Shameful Secret” and browse the site for info regarding what I said above and the severe medical problems due to the Teflon that was well known back then to not be used in a loaded joint, like hips and TMJ jaw joints (on that FB group is a photo of my broken and failed Vitek-Kent VK-ll Proplast Teflon TMJ total joints, and a skull drawing I did one sleepless night portraying my STILL living nightmare from Teflon and DOW Silastic IPI TMJ implants, Silastic is same as silicone but in a sheet form, and DOWs Silastic also was/is a systemic medical disaster just like the breast implant victims, the Silastic patients have same plus different medical problems as the silicone breast implant patients.

Just saw it today. the fact that it wasnt nominated for an oscar is beyond me. Inside baseball... I love that saying. Awesome DW keep it up man.

AMERICA. The Toilet Bowl off the World. And you know it.

2:19 2:28. JUMANJI board game all the time. (My little sister always demanded to employ the scotty dog avatar as her marker on the board, which I didn't mind a single bit because I preferred the iron.) I usually got stuck with being the "Banker, since I got good grades in math. But I really hated making change all the time (and it was pretty tedious trying to remember to dole out 200 every time someone passed "Go. However, the movie variation of JUMANJI seems to be an even bigger pain in the butt than the beloved store version. The perverse concept of everyone changing bodies whenever anyone gets wet- like some Parents' Swap Night Party of musical chairs- surely would have grossed out we children and deterred us from playing JUMANJI a second time. Ditto the idea of gamers becoming nonverbal animals such as horses, whether they could fly or not. To paraphrase Fred March (INHERIT THE WIND. Give me that old time JUMANJI, give me that old time JUMANJI; it was good enough for grandpa, and it's good enough for me.

No matter how many Sony employees spam IMDB we all know this sequel was bland and just the same as its prequel.
There will be a couple more of these of course (Sony is a junkie and desperate) but we won't be at the theaters of course.

Right away we pick up directly where we left off where the main characters have all moved on to their adult lives after high school trying to build their futures.
Jumanji: The Next Level is fun and action packed for all ages. The subtle adult humor jokes were an added plus. I grew up with the original Jumanji and this film does a great job being its own, taking risks, while making great callbacks and connections to the first of the Jumanji films. I hope there is a 3rd Jumanji because of how well these are done.
